JONESBORO Jonesboro spoils Tigers guard Antonio Johnson 24 point Senior Night performance to improve to 15-3. The atmosphere felt like the playoffs with the home and visiting crowd bringing that high energy, and the players playing relentlessly on both ends.
"Intense... I didn't expect the kind of intensity," said Mundy's Mill first year head coach Fernando Daniel. "I absolutely loved it... I couldn't have asked for a better game than that."
Johnson had the hot hand early in the game, scoring on all three levels from Mundy's Mill. Despite having nine point in the first quarter, his team trailed by just one.
The Cardinals began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring Mundy's Mill 20-13. Jonesboro made their living attacking the basket and scoring in transition. Junior Montez Redding put the crowd in a frenzy with a breakaway, back-scratcher dunk as his team led by eight going into the half.
The Tigers slowed down Jonesboro and began to climb back in the third quarter. A triple and aggressive drives to the basket kept Mundy's Mill in the game. Following a three-point play from Johnson, the Mill only trailed by three as the third concluded.
Midway in the fourth, Jonesboro's starting five goes to the bench as their second unit took the court to finish the game. The Cardinals led 62-57 with 1:07 left to play. Following two made free throws from Johnson, Tigers junior Timothy Babb gets the steal and Mundy's Mill calls timeout with :23 on the clock.
Johnson is found and goes back to the free throw. With the opportunity to bring the game to within one, he misses the first free throw and Jonesboro throws the outlet pass to junior AJ Horton for the open dunk to finish the game.
