HAMPTON A 22-0 third quarter gave Mundy's Mill the edge over Forest Park to finish the game with the final score 32-14. This is the Tiger's fourth straight win, still undefeated on away games for the season.
This marks the first meeting between head coaches Corey Johnson of Forest Park and Earthwind Moreland of Mundy's Mill.
The first half was a slow start for both teams. Mundy's Mill had difficulty capitalizing on goal line opportunities, while Forest Park had multiple snapping errors.
Due to a low snap in their own end zone, the Panther's punt gets blocked, resulting in a safety for the Tigers. On the kickoff, junior Antonio Hardrick returns it to the 10-yard line. But Forest Park's defense stood their ground and stopped them on the goal line.
In the second quarter with Mundy's Mill on Forest Park's nine-yard line, the Tigers throw a pick-six with cornerback Matthew Strickland being the recipient of the interception. A Panthers fumble causes the two-point conversion to be no good, leaving the score 6-2.
In the following drive, Mundy's Mill had a 20-yard run to the Panther's 10-yard line called back due to a personal foul committed by the Tigers. Now with first and long, Tigers quarterback Donovan Morton throws a touchdown pass to receiver Keandre Haines. Forest Park blocked the field goal attempt.
The first half ended with Mundy's Mill leading 8-6.
On the opening drive for the Tigers, senior Jaylen Cooper runs it to the outside to score a touchdown for Mundy's Mill. The Panthers continued to be plague by high snaps, with the ball going passed the end zone, giving the Tigers another safety.
Mundy's Mill scored on the following possession, with senior Antonio Johnson being the beneficiary of the TD, but Forest Park blocked the extra point.
Another three-and-out for the Panthers gives the Tigers another opportunity. Long carries put Mundy's Mill on the Panther's 11-yard line. Senior Dajuan Springer runs it up the middle for a Tigers touchdown.
With the extra point being good, Mundy's Mill headed into the fourth with the 30-6 lead.
On the Forest Park punt, another high snap goes into their own end zone, giving Mundy's Mill their third safety of the game.
On the first drive in the fourth, the Tigers get picked off by Strickland again. With two unsportsmanlike penalties called on Mundy's Mill, thus putting the ball on their 5-yard line, Forest Park runs it in for a touchdown. The field goal would be blocked.
Forest Parks gets a safety on Mundy's Mill, but neither team scored for the remainder of the fourth.
Despite winning on their homecoming night, Coach Moreland was not satisfied with the team's performance.
"To be honest, it doesn't even feel like we're 2-1 [in the region], and that we're on a four game winning streak," said Coach Moreland. "I felt like we took too many steps backwards in today's game."
His reason being the multiple penalties that Mundy's Mill received throughout the course of the game, with holding being the primary.
Forest Park is scheduled to go against Rockdale County next while Mundy's Mill next opponent is Jonesboro.
